BROUK Welcomes EU-Parliament resolution on Burma
By Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK • February 12, 2010Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK today welcomed the European Parliament resolution of 10th February 2010 which mentions that Burma’s planned elections 2010 cannot be free and fair. The resolution also supports tri-partite dialogue and strongly condemns the ongoing systematic violations of human rights fundamental freedoms and basic democratic rights of the people of Burma.
They expressed their concern about the continuing discrimination, human rights violations, violence, displacement and economic deprivation affecting numerous ethnic minorities, including, but not limited to, the Rohingya ethnic minority in Northern Rakhine State, and calls upon the Government of Myanmar to take immediate action to bring about an improvement in their respective situations.
European Union Parliament also urged the Government of Bangladesh to immediately cease arrests, push-backs and forced displacement of the unregistered Rohingya population in Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban Districts; to recognise that the unregistered Rohingyas are stateless asylum seekers who fled persecution in Myanmar and are in need of international protection; and to provide them with adequate protection, access to livelihood and other basic services.
The Rohingya, who are rendered stateless, are worst victims of systematic, persistent and widespread human rights violations in Burma, including denial of citizenship rights, severe restrictions on freedom of movement, education and marriage etc. These crimes against humanity which are arguably ‘slow-burning genocide’ forced the Rohingyas to leave their homes in search of peace, safe shelter, and protection. Government of Bangladesh should treat them humanitarianly while addressing the root cause of their flights from Arakan.
We are very much thankful to European Parliament and its MEPs for this timely resolution which is a source of encouragement for the persecuted Rohingya people.
