Today, Burma-born American Nyi Nyi Aung was unjustly sentenced to 3 years in prison with hard labour. He was sentenced under three different sections for a total of 5 years, however the judge commuted his sentence to 3 years. The court unjustly found Nyi Nyi guilty of forging a national identity card, failing to declare currencies at customs, and failing to renounce his Burmese citizenship – trumped-up charges aimed to silence his activism. For more information about Nyi Nyi’s sentences, please read the press releases from the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners (Burma) and Freedom Now.
In a press release today, the Swedish Burma Committee (SBC) expressed worry felt throughout the Burma movement: that Nyi Nyi Aung’s case is not a priority for the US. The SBC called on the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt to bring up the case with US Secretary of State Clinton.
