A new Burmese Education Magazine, Maukkha, is released with aims to improve education rights, social justice and quality education. The 149 pages magazine is published by Maukkha Education Publishing House, one of the major projects of the Maukkha Institute of Teacher Education (Maukkha Institute).
In the editorial section of the magazine, a statement is made: “In this journey towards a peaceful and knowledge society which is characterized by social justice and freedom, we wish to contribute our knowledge and experiences in education. As a better choice, we will pave the way to this journey with wisdom, educational vision and new thinking…” “…in this failed state, our cultural warriors in classrooms throughout Burma are struggling on daily basis. Their personal sacrifices for achievement in education, and humanism they express, are going to be inscribed… ”
The consultant and editor, Thein Naing, explains regarding the publication of the educational magazine: “for decades, children in Burma have lost their educational rights. Both teachers and students are suffering from lack of social justice and basic rights. They also do not have a voice. This is a very worrying situation. Especially our new generations need to be equipped with knowledge and skills for a better future. And Maukkha will fill in the gap. We will raise the community’s concerns and awareness. Issues regarding education for all children, a broad and balanced curriculum, teachers’ rights and a quality education are also going to be addressed. Our primary goal is to push for an education system conducive to a democratic and peaceful society.”
A total of 50 writers, school teachers and children across Burma contributed poems, articles, short stories, lesson plans and research papers in education for the very first publication of the magazine, Maukkha. And it will be published quarterly, along with other educational resource materials for teachers and children.
The border based magazine is going to be distributed among the displaced communities, refugees and ethnic populations. Moreover, the Maukkha website will have daily postings on diverse topics in education available both in Burmese and English.
