Canadian Friends of Burma would like to express its strong support for the National League for Democracy (NLD)’s decision not to take part in Burma’s elections.
We are calling on the Canadian government to likewise support the NLD’s decision and to condemn the new electoral laws set in place by the military junta earlier this year.
The NLD announced this week that it will not be participating in Burma’s federal elections, due to take place later this year, after over 100 party members met in Rangoon March 29.
The NLD argued that it could not participate due to unjust electoral laws. The military junta had required it to expel Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the party, due to her “criminal record”.
Despite winning the majority of votes in a landslide election in 1990, the NLD was prevented from taking power by the ruling military junta. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest and has remained there since.
