Developments

The Chin National League for Democracy said it would not participate in the upcoming elections because the SPDC was dishonest.
Three new political parties and one existing political party filed registration papers to participate in the upcoming elections. To date, a total of 23 parties – 19 new parties and four existing parties – have filed registration applications.
The SPDC Election Commission granted tentative approval to five political parties to contest the upcoming elections.
The SPDC, USDA, and National Unity Party courted Muslim voters in Northern Arakan State, with donations and personal gifts.

Reactions

The Council of the European Union expressed “its serious concerns that election laws as published in early March do not provide for free and fair elections,” and noted that the SPDC still had “to take the steps necessary to make the planned elections later this year a credible, transparent and inclusive process.”
