Global Actions to Denounce Burma’s 2010 Military Elections

By Ten Alliances  •  May 25, 2010

Burmese Community and Supporters Hold People’s Elections

Organizations around the world will be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 1990 elections in Burma on 27 May with demonstrations, rallies and other events. Groups on the Thai-Burma border and around the world are holding “People’s Elections” where people can vote for real democratic elections and sign postcards calling on ASEAN to denounce the 2010 elections in Burma and reject the results unless the regime changes course. For these elections to be the truly democratic elections that the people of Burma need, the regime must first:

  1. Release all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi;
  2. Cease hostilities against ethnic and democracy groups; and,
  3. Engage in inclusive dialogue with key stakeholders from democracy groups and ethnic nationalities, including a review of the 2008 Constitution.

In New Delhi, India:

What: People’s Elections and Rally. A People’s Election Commission was formed with Church and community leaders who will collect postcard ballots.

Events will be held between 27 and 30 May on the Thai-Burma border, in India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, UK, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, US, Canada, and Brazil, marking a Global Day of Action as part of the Global Campaign Against Burma’s 2010 Military Elections.

For more information on the events planned around the world, please visit the campaign website at www.burmapartnership.org/2010elections/global-day-of-action-events/

Groups will continue to gather signed postcards until Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday on 19 June, when the People’s Election results will be announced and the postcards delivered to national governments. The postcard will also be available to sign online at www.burmapartnership.org/2010elections/takeaction shortly.

The Global Campaign Against Burma’s 2010 Military Elections was initiated by the Ten Alliances of Burma’s democracy and ethnic rights movement, representing the most broad-based and multi-ethnic cooperation of political and civil society organizations from inside and in exile working for national reconciliation, peace, and freedom in Burma. It is supported by over 150 organizations around the world.
