“People’s Elections” Results To Be Announced
The Ten Alliances of Burma’s movement for democracy and ethnic rights will be honouring the life and vision of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi with a celebration of her 65th birthday. Currently under house arrest, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s vision of a peaceful and democratic Burma has yet to be realized but she continues to be a symbol of freedom and democracy for people in Burma and around the world.
With the same spirit of freedom and democracy, the Ten Alliances will announce the results of the “People’s Elections” held around the world. The “People’s Elections” began with a Global Day of Action on 27 May, the 20th anniversary of the NLD and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s landslide victory in the 1990 elections. Organized by the Ten Alliances, Burmese communities and solidarity organizations around the world have been collecting ballot postcards whereby voters could vote for a ‘real election’ or a ‘military selection’ and call on ASEAN and international governments to denounce the military’s elections and refuse to recognize the results unless the regime changes course.

The Global Day of Action was part of the Global Campaign Against Burma’s 2010 Military Elections. The Campaign was initiated by the Ten Alliances of Burma’s democracy and ethnic rights movement, representing the most broad-based and multi-ethnic cooperation of political and civil society organizations from inside and in exile working for national reconciliation, peace, and freedom in Burma. It is endorsed by over 150 organizations around the world.
