Exclusive Performance of ‘The Lady of Burma’ in European Parliament
By European Parliamentary Caucus on Burma • June 30, 2010Today, European Parliamentary Caucus on Burma (EPCB) is pleased to present ‘The Lady of Burma’ play in European Parliament in honour of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on her 65th birthday which was on 19th June 2010.
The Lady of Burma is an inspirational and moving story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her courageous struggle to bring freedom to Burma. The play has had sell-out performances at the Edinburgh Festival and the Old Vic theatre in London.
The event is hosted by Raul Romeva, MEP and EPCB Executive Committee member and, vice-chair of Group of the Greens / European Free Alliance, and Libor Roucek, MEP and Vice President of European Parliament. The play will help raise awareness about Aung San Suu Kyi and her struggle for democracy and freedom in Burma in order to increase support from members of European Parliament.
Through several resolutions, European Parliament has already been very supportive for human rights and democracy in Burma, calling for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in Burma.
“As members of European Parliament, we will continue our support for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in her struggle for her country’s freedom and do what ever we can to make sure the world does not forget about her and Burma”, said Raul Romeva MEP,
executive member of the European Parliamentary Caucus on Burma.
The event will start at 18.30 with a welcome reception followed by the performance and the evening will end approximately at 20.00.
About EPCB: The European Parliamentary Caucus on Burma was founded in June 2008 to raise awareness on Burma in Europe and promote human rights and democracy in Burma. It represents 16 European countries with more than 160 MPs.
