Statement on 65th birthday of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

By Women's League of Burma  •  June 19, 2010

Today, June 19th 2010, marks the 65th birthday of pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi while she does remain alone under house arrest.

After the premeditated Depayin Massacred in May 2003, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was again confined to house arrest although her house arrest term was completed on May 27, 2009 according to the existing law. Instead of being rightfully freed, she was held and trialed with unlawful charges at the notorious Insein prison and since these proceedings she is kept under house arrest.

Moreover, the regime has completely neglected the righteous efforts to restore democracy urged by both the people of Burma and International Community. Rigid legal provisions in the election laws have been enacted in attempt to sideline Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from Burma’s political arena, as well as to create divisions between the leaders of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and therefore, Women’s League of Burma (WLB) sees these motives as tricky political assassination.

However, leaders of the NLD, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi have made a rightful decision to not take part in the regime’s sham election and WLB sees this as dignified and strong in political determination of the NLD and thus WLB would like to honor their decision as a credible political move on her auspicious 65th Birthday.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a leader of people of Burma, celebrated her birthday under house arrest not only today, but she has observed many in such isolated conditions in almost 20 years. Even though, she is within restricted house arrest, she continues to be highly respected and inspirational national figure of the people of Burma, along with democracy-loving people around the world for her unwavering and determined political leadership.

We, Women League of Burma calls upon the people of Burma to join hand in this noble, peaceful struggle to put the military dictatorship to an end by holding the political call “From freedom of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi” to “Freedom of the people of Burma”.

WLB also calls upon the international community, including the United Nations, to exert pressure on the SPDC favored 2010 election which will only strengthen the long live of the military system and bring more suffering to the people of Burma rather than to open up the political arena and bring about genuine democratization.
