Week 12: 2010 Election Watch (25-31 May)

Developments

  • Two new political parties filed registration papers to participate in the upcoming elections. To date, a total of 42 parties – 37 new parties and five existing parties – have filed registration applications.
  • The SPDC Election Commission approved the registration of 10 political parties. To date, the Election Commission has granted final approval to 24 parties to participate in the polls.
  • SPDC Election Sub-Commissions in Irrawaddy Division and Chin and Mon States held election training.
  • The Union Solidarity and Development Party, National Unity Party, Shan Nationals Democratic Party and PaO National Organization campaigned in Loilem Township, Shan State. Meanwhile, the USDP started to campaign in all of Shan State and forced local village headmen to recruit new USDP members.
