Announcing a New Photo Petition Calling for a Commission of Inquiry

By Burma Partnership  •  July 30, 2010

Groups around the world are preparing to launch a new photo petition in support of ongoing international campaigns calling for a commission of inquiry and opposing the military regime’s elections this year. The activities will commence with the anniversary of Burma’s 1988 pro-democracy uprising to commemorate the nationwide protests in which 10,000 peaceful demonstrators were shot and killed as they demanded democracy and an end to human rights violations and economic mismanagement. In the last 22 years, these abuses have worsened under the current military regime. We hope you will join in this photo petition to send a strong message that people around the world have not and will not forget about the severe human rights violations carried out by successive military regimes against the people of Burma.

Individuals can participate by taking a photo of themselves holding a hand-written poster with the name and case of a human rights violation from the list that will be provided. Please send photos to [email protected]. If you’re on Facebook, you can also upload it as your profile picture and post it on the wall of the photo petition event. You can also add your photo to your blog or website.

We will be collecting photos until 27 September, the 3rd anniversary of the Saffron Revolution, when an estimated 200 Buddhist monks and people were shot and killed in September 2007. Photos will be collected here and will be delivered to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with an appeal for the UN to establish a commission of inquiry into serious international crimes and for him to take a firm lead in securing genuine political dialogue in Burma.

To complement the photo petition, organizations or individuals can send a letter to their national government calling on them to support a commission of inquiry. The letter will also call on governments to denounce the elections and refuse to recognize the results unless the military regime releases all political prisoners, ceases attacks against ethnic communities and enters into dialogue with key stakeholders in the country.
