Statement on the 22nd anniversary of 8.8.88 Burmese People’s uprising against the military dictators

By Burmese Democratic Forces in Japan  •  August 8, 2010

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the “8.8.88 people’s revolt against the military dictators of Burma”. Even though, many blood, sweats and life had been sacrificed and many have been still sacrificing, people’s desire to build a democratic nation and a free society has not been accomplished yet. People of the Union of Burma have still suffering from gross violation of Human Rights, unruly terrorizations and unlawful detentions committed by the military dictators. Additionally, the military dictators have been committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing rape as a weapon and genocide upon the ethnic minorities as a daily bases. Consequently, our motherland is on the verge of the economic disaster and in the middle of the dark thickness of void of democracy.

The 1990 elections result and the leading people’s party, the National League for Democracy, and its ethnic minorities coalition partners that were the accomplishments of 8.8.88 people’s uprising had been illegally sidelined. Moreover, the so-called 2010 sham elections based on the illegitimate 2008 constitution, that will stamp the military dictatorship forever has been deceitfully pushing forward by the military thugs. The hard currencies earn by selling the offshore natural gases and valuable natural resources has been misused to build up the military capability, in the void of external threat, and even attempt to acquire the nuclear bombs instead of utilizing to promote the outdated education and health sectors is resulted in deepening the economic misery of our future.

We believe that these misdemeanors and delinquencies of the military dictators will lead to collapse of their own military rule. Unlike during the 8.8.88, now we already have Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as our national leader, powerful opposition forces inside and outside the country and capable and well-experienced middle and small ranking leaders on our disposal. For that reason, we are very confident that we are to stage a second people’s uprising in the near future and definitely achieve this time.

If we look back to the history, we will find out that when the people united and fight with perseverance and diligence, even the most powerful and the most fortitude dictators will collapse.

Therefore, on this very auspicious day, we, the democratic forces inside and outside the county, must make resolute and solemn pledge to fight the military dictators once and for all under the leadership of our national leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
