NYAN WIN, BURMESE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, IS GIVEN A GOOD RECEPTION IN BRUSSELS AT THE OCCASION OF THE ASEM8 FORUM.
ACTIONS BIRMANIE CONDEMNS THE PRESENCE OF THIS HIGH-LEVEL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE BURMESE MILITARY JUNTA.
In his last March report, the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations, O. Quintana, condemned the junta in strongest terms : ” Given the gross and systematic nature of human rights violations in Myanmar over a period of many years, and the lack of accountability, there is an indication that those human rights violations are the result of a State policy that involves authorities in the executive, military and judiciary at all levels” and went on to specify that: “some of these human rights violations may entail categories of crimes against humanity or war crimes”.
Following these recommendations, 12 countries, of which 8 EU Member States, have recently called for the establishment of a commission of inquiry on the war crimes and the crimes against humanity committed by the Burmese junta.1
Not only is Belgium dragging its feet by not having yet joined the list of countries in favour of this initiative. It is also laying the red carpet for the Burmese criminals’ spokesperson to walk upon!
