Intimidation, Imprisonment and Repression: The Road to Military Victory in the 2010 Elections

“Not being allowed to cast our own vote is a violation under the electoral law. It’s fraud, voting fraud. It also happened in the 2008 referendum vote. Now it is happening again. Superiors know the natures of employees and understand that they would not dare to retort them. I have some friends from USDP and they are always boasting that they have already won.”

This 2010 Election report of ND-Burma is based on 247 cases researched throughout Burma. The report presents violations of Human Rights under 9 headings explaining how the military government has committed widespread violations to ensure victory of USDP party in the 2010 election. The finding of the research has proven that threat of violence, intimidation, and other forms of coercion were extensively used against the citizens during the elections. Other significant violations presented in the report include denial of the right of freedom of movement and denial of the right to freedom of expression, assembly, and association and prevention of participation or standing for election.

The report finally offers an assumption that Human Right situation in Burma is unlikely to improve as the November 7 Election does not contribute any democratic change to Burma; besides, it has proven to be neither free nor fair.
