Burma Centre Delhi in collaboration with India-based Burmese pro-democratic forces organized a protest rally at Jantar Mantar on 3 November 2010 against the upcoming Burma’s 2010 election on 7 November 2010. The event was one of the biggest as around 900 Burmese from different ethnic groups participated in their respective traditional attires holding placards and shouting slogans in the capital of India. A petition endorsed by India-based Burmese organizations and Indian civil society groups along with 8831 signatures were submitted to the Prime Minister of India. A copy of statement which was released by Indian Parliamentarians’ Forum for Democracy in Burma was also submitted.
There were participants from India and Tibetan exile groups including Rev. Acharya Yashi Phuntsok, exile Tibetan Member of Parliament and Mr. Dorji, President of Tibetan Youth Congress who delivered powerful speeches by condemning the military government in Burma for ignoring the rights of the people and the upcoming elections as Sham. The Indian speakers were Vijay Jolly, Jt. Convener, All India BJP Overseas Cell, Mr. Surendra Kumar, National Secretary, Gandhi Peace Foundation and Dr. Javed Razad, National General Secretary of JDU. The Burmese speakers were Dr. Tint Swe, exile Burmese Member of Parliament, Thin Thin Aung, Women’s League of Burma, Dr. Rungbik, Falam community leader, Pu Tin Du Mang, Hakha community leader and T K Lianpu, Chin community leader.
