The long-awaited release of Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest in Burma is hopefully the welcome next chapter in the movement of that country towards democracy says Labour Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Maryan Street.
“The leader of the former National League for Democracy has become an international symbol of democracy. She has spent 15 of the last twenty years under one form or another of detention,” said Maryan Street.
“This is the moment when the international community needs to stand by Aung San Suu Kyi and ensure that the junta does not use civil unrest in the wake of the unsatisfactory elections in Burma as an excuse to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi again.
“I join with others around the world in paying tribute to her courage and determination as she endured year upon year of detention and house arrest. Her personal sacrifices are legendary.
“She has the ability and the mana to reunite Burma once more if she is given the chance, as her father did before her.
“Right now however we celebrate her release,” said Maryan Street.
