Press Release on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s Release

The Federation of Trade Union of Burma (FTUB) celebrates with joy and emotion, the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the heroin and leader of the people and workers of Burma, and expresses its deep emotion and joy.

“Today is a great day for the people and the workers of Burma.” Maung Maung, the General Secretary of the FTUB declared, “The FTUB thanks Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for her great sacrifice, commitment and leadership, despite her tight reclusion for 15 years. The FTUB will continue to support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in the immensely difficult work for democracy, human rights, peace and equal right for all the people and workers of Burma.”

The FTUB, in spite of the fact that its activity is strongly prohibited and repressed by the military junta, organizes tens of thousands of workers in all sectors and workplaces of the country and today, more than ever, confirms its commitment to reach peace, the full respect of all human and workers’ rights and a democratic, inclusive federal union.

The FTUB confirms its engagement and support to Aung San Suu Kyi, to grant her security, freedom of speech, movement and association. The FTUB calls once again for the immediate elimination of forced labor, land confiscation, rape and other violation of fundamental human rights particularly in the ethnic areas.

The FTUB calls on the immediate release of all political prisoners and labor activists and calls on the international institution, the UN, the ILO, the governments to stand by Aung San Suu Kyi, and to maintain a strong diplomatic, political and economic pressure, including the targeted economic sanctions, to reach the requested tripartite dialogue between the military junta, the democratic and ethnic representatives to build a long lasting time framed democratic change toward a democracy self determination and an inclusive federal Union.

In this regard, The FTUB calls on the governments, meeting these week at the ILO Governing Body, to request for an urgent Advisory opinion to the International Court of Justice for the violation of the Convention on forced labor, and to the UN General Assembly to establish an international Court on war crimes and against humanity committed by the military junta.
