Burmese democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will be awarded with an honorary degree – Doctor of Law – by the Carleton University on February 22 in Ottawa – the third honorary degree she would receive from Canada’s prestigious institutions.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi received her first honorary degree from the University of Toronto in 1993 and the second one from the Queen’s University in 1995. She also received other awards and honours from Canada including Gandhi Award from Simon Fraser University in 1995, CAW Nelson Mandela Human Rights Award in 2000, and Honorary Canadian Citizenship in 2008.
Former Canadian Foreign Minister Flora McDonald will give a keynote speech at the awarding ceremony during the convocation next week. However, Daw Aung San Suu will not be able to be present at the ceremony and would receive the honorary degree in absenstia.
