Aung San Suu Kyi supports UN ‘commission of inquiry’ on Burma

Burmese democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said she supports the establishment of ‘commission of inquiry’ into human rights violations in Burma.

She made the endorsement for the first time in her video-taped message sent to a hearing of US House Sub-committee on Asia-Pacific earlier today.

The coordinated campaign launched by a number of Burma campaign and solidarity groups around the world has already secured a support of sixteen countries including Canada. However, China has been trying to block this initiative according to various reports and diplomatic sources.

During a recent session of UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Professor Quintana, UN human rights special Rapporteur, emphasized on the need to establish the commission to find out more on allegations of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Burma.

“It is simply a commission of inquiry to find out what human rights violations have taken place and what we can do to ensure that such violations do not take place in the future. I would appreciate everything that is done to help Professor Quintana in his work,” said Suu Kyi in her speech.
