An ILO Commission of Inquiry on Freedom of Association in Burma (Myanmar) – The time is now!
By International Trade Union Confederation • October 11, 2011Freedom of association has long been denied in law and practice in Burma (Myanmar), despite several years of strong criticism by the ILO supervisory bodies. The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and its affiliate, the Federation of Trade Unions – Burma (FTUB), call upon the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to approve, at the November 2011 session (312th), the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry (COI) under Article 26 of the ILO Constitution for serious and systematic violations of the Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise Convention, 1948 (No. 87).2 This step will allow the Governing Body to further press the government of Burma to finally undertake long called-for reforms.
