Update on the October 12 Prisoner Release

By Assistance Association for Political Prisoners - Burma  •  October 12, 2011

The U Thein Sein administration announced on the 11th of October that 6,359 prisoners would be released under a general amnesty. As of today, October 12, 2011, the first group of prisoners was released. AAPP has received information that some of the freed detainees are political prisoners. Thus far, AAPP can confirm the release of over 80 political prisoners. Even though prominent political prisoners Gen. Hso Ten and Zarganar were released, many other prominent student leaders such as Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi, Min Zeya, Htay Kywe and ethnic leaders such as U Khun Tun Oo have not been released.

The well-known comedian Zarganar, (aka) Thura, who was released this morning commented on the events, “If we talk about the change going on in Burma, what I can say is I still don’t believe that Burma is really on the right track. I’m saying that based on my experience. What I mean is that only a few political prisoners are included in today’s release.”

Download the Excel list here of political prisoners included in today’s release. There might be more political prisoners released from earlier this morning whose information AAPP has not yet received. We will continue to monitor and publish any new political prisoner updates.
