KNU Leaves to Continue Talks on Ceasefires with the Burmese Government

Today, April 4, 2012, the KNU delegation led by Naw Zipporah Sein, the General Secretary, leaves the Thai border town of Mae Sot to continue the second round of ceasefire talks with the Burmese Government. The talks with the Government will take place initially in Pa-An, and subsequently in Yangon and Pago from April 4 to 11, 2012.

The talks will focus on the following:

Details of the cease fire arrangement between the KNU and the Burmese Government
Progressive realization of a nationwide ceasefire
Guaranteed safety for civilian populations
Trust building at all levels
Protection of Human Rights

The delegation will also be meeting with the Karen civil society, political parties, community organizations, and leaders and members of the National League for Democracy during this trip. The purpose of these meetings is to engage all levels of society in the process of achieving peace in a nation that has been in armed conflict for several decades. The KNU believes that lasting peace should be achieved through the combined effort of all people who are directly and indirectly affected by the coming political change.

Additionally, the KNU delegation and the Representatives of the Burmese Government plan to visit some sites such as Tavoy in Taninthayi Division and Kyaukkyi and Mu Theh in Pago Division. The purpose of this joint visit is to observe the opening of a humanitarian assistance office and to meet with regional and local citizens who have been affected by conflict for years.

Following the negotiations, members of the delegation and the designated spokespersons will be on-site to address questions by the media and public.
