Women’s Groups Launch Campaign Against National Race Protection Law

By Karen Women Empowerment Group  •  July 18, 2013

Karen Women Empowerment Group and other local women’s groups have released this poster as a part of a campaign to oppose the controversial National Race Protection Law.

The proposed law states that non-Buddhist men wishing to marry a Buddhist woman would have to convert to her religion. They must also obtain permission from the woman’s parents and local authorities before marrying or risk 10 years in jail. The law violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Read more here.
