Condolences on the Death of U Win Tin

By Burma Campaign UK  •  April 21, 2014

Burma Campaign UK is deeply sad to learn of the death of U Win Tin.

U Win Tin was a hero of Burma’s democracy movement. He was never intimidated, never lost hope, and never stopped working for a genuinely democratic Burma.

U Win Tin was a journalist who challenged censorship and campaigned for media freedom. He co-founded the National League for Democracy and, most recently established the U Win Tin Foundation, which works for the release of political prisoners, and assists former political prisoners.

Burma Campaign UK campaigned for the release of U Win Tin while he was in jail, and was in regular contact with him following his release. He gave encouragement and support for our work, and never held back from suggesting we work even harder on campaign issues.

U Win Tin was deeply sceptical about the true course of the current reform process. He encouraged Burma Campaign UK to keep working for the release of all political prisoners, and to keep working on issues of justice and accountability.

U Win Tin was an inspirational leader who was deeply respected. He will be sorely missed. We must all work together to fulfil his dream of a free and democratic Burma.
