Women Delegates at Global Summit Use Social Media Campaign To Raise Awareness

Women delegates from Burma are attending the Global Summit To End Sexual Violence In Conflict. The Summit is being held in London this week, hosted by British Foreign Secretary William Hague and Angelina Jolie.

To coincide with the summit, the Women’s League of Burma has launched a social media campaign to raise awareness of ongoing sexual violence by the Burmese Army.

A series of posters are being produced for sharing on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The posters feature pictures of women delegates with quotes, and recommendations from the recent report produced by WLB, ‘Same Patterns, Same Impunity’, documenting the ongoing use of rape and sexual violence by the Burmese Army since elections were held in 2010. The first posters released have already reached more than 150,000 people on social media. More will follow over the coming week as the delegation of women from Burma stay in London for further meetings with the British government, senior politicians, and will speak in the British Parliament.

“Social media such as Facebook is increasingly popular in Burma, and using social media enables us to reach hundreds of thousands of people with the message that the use of rape and sexual violence by the Burmese Army has to end,” said Tin Tin Nyo, General Secretary of the Women’s League of Burma. “Using Facebook, Twitter and other social media helps us reach the people directly, as media in our country is still not able to freely report about how the Burmese Army continues to use rape as a weapon of war.”
