KNO’s Condemation Statement on Unprovoked Attacked at KIA’s Military Academy by the Burma Army

By Kachin National Organization  •  November 25, 2014

1. Kachin National Organization strongly condemn the Burma Army’s intentional, unprovoked, barbaric attack at the KIA’s military academy on 19th November 2014 at 12:36pm, which killed 23 cadets and seriously injured 20 others.

2. This brutal attack is not an isolated incident. It is one of many unprovoked attacks carried out with impunity. We believe it is a sign of a carefully planned attempt to destroy the current, ongoing nationwide ceasefire negotiations. Therefore, we urgently call on the United Nations and the international community to condemn such attacks, to protect and prevent further destruction, build trust and strengthen dialogue for Burma’s national reconciliation process.

3. We, the people of Burma, must be aware that the Burma Army’s intention is to attack the ethnic nationalities in the name of ‘Myanma Tatmadaw’ and to divide the Burman majority from other ethnic nationalities by creating racial tension between us.

4. There is no chance of building a peaceful and prosperous nation by military means. Genuine political negotiation is the only answer to build the trust among the ethnic nationalities and bring about national reconciliation for genuine freedom with lasting peace.

5. The aggressiveness and cruelty of this attack will not intimidate the Kachin people. We will be as relentless as we have been for more than 50 years in our pursuit of self-determination, justice, freedom and peaceful coexistence within the Union of Burma.

6. We call on the people of Burma, who long for the Union to be a genuine federal democracy, to unite and work together to achieve our shared goals and aspirations by fighting against those who still want to cling to their military power to enslave us.
