KNU Position Statement on Tatmadaw’s Bombardment with Heavy Weapons on KIO Military Officer Academy
By Karen National Union • November 21, 20141. We were much saddened on receiving the news that 23 young cadet officers were killed and 20 others wounded, who were attending the KIO Military Academy, due to Myanmar Tatmadaw’s bombardment with heavy weapons on November 19, 2014.
2. In this time of peace building period, this attack should not have happened. We are concerned that the armed clashes in the KIO areas these days may impact the internal peace program being implemented vigorously nowadays by President U Thein Sein government.
3. Together with the other ethnic armed organizations, the KIO has been actively cooperating in the NCCT for reaching Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement.
4. We urge also for ceasing armed clashes in the KIO areas and for both sides to peacefully negotiate for a resolution.
5. We seriously urge and call on the Union Peace-making Work Committee to undertake swift coordination, as necessary.
