The United States remains deeply concerned by reports of renewed military action in southern and eastern Kachin State. This includes the death of more than 20 individuals at a cadet school on November 19. We are especially concerned about reports of recent fighting near villages and internally-displaced person (IDP) camps near Momauk Township, Kachin State. Such military action that puts at risk the lives of vulnerable communities in Kachin State and hinders the provision of critical humanitarian assistance to IDPs will only increase suffering, deepen mistrust, and undermine the prospects for peace. The United States strongly encourages restraint and dialogue in service of genuine, lasting peace with justice in Kachin State, and urges that provocative military activity in Kachin State that make conflict more rather than less likely be avoided. We also urge the Union Government to ensure regular and unhindered humanitarian access to all affected areas of Kachin State so that displaced populations can receive much needed assistance in accordance with international principles.
