Assistant Secretary of State Malinowski’s Travel to Burma

Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Tom Malinowski and U.S. Ambassador Derek Mitchell will lead a delegation of senior U.S. officials from the Departments of State, Defense, and USAID to the second U.S.-Burma Human Rights Dialogue January 11-17, 2015.

Prior to the bilateral human rights discussions, the delegation will visit Myitkyina, Kachin State and Rangoon to consult with Burmese civil society organizations, religious leaders, political leaders, and international humanitarian organizations January 11-13.

The bilateral portion of the Human Rights Dialogue will take place in Naypyitaw, Burma January 14-15 where the two delegations will discuss the full range of human rights issues and democratic reforms, including political prisoners, media freedom, land rights, labor rights, protecting civilians and allowing access to humanitarian assistance in conflict areas, legal and constitutional reform, combatting discrimination, and military reform.

The interagency delegation to the Dialogue will also include Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne Richard, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Conflict and Stabilization Operations (acting) Jason Lewis-Berry, USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator for Asia Jason Foley, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Thomas Harvey, Defense Institute for International Legal Studies Director Colonel Steven Weir, and Lieutenant General Anthony Crutchfield, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command.
