Religions for Peace – Myanmar shared its deepest condolence with the bereaved family and is extremely saddened by the rape, torture and killing of Kachin Baptist Convention religious volunteer teachers – Maran Lu Ra and Tangbau Hkawn Nan Tsin, age 20 and 21 at Kawng Hka village, Pansan township, Muse District, Northern Shan State, on the night of 19 January, 2015. Religions for Peace – Myanmar strongly condemns such act of armed and sexual violence in the Christian church compound in Kawng Hka village and to any kind of armed violence.
While Myanmar is gaining positive impression from the international community, this brutality imposed on the young Kachin girls have demonstrated that conflict areas in Myanmar remain plagued by violence of the most horrific form. We need to be vigilant about this brutal incident that can transform into unsolicited religious and ethnic conflicts.
Timely investigation should be expedited and effective action should be taken in order to prevent the repetition of such brutal incident. Within the Rule of Law, public’s basic rights and human rights should be prevented equally with no discrimination of race and religion.
We would like to appeal to the authority concern to immediately stop sexual violence against all women of Myanmar and to efficiently investigate on the sexual abuses in the conflict areas, and to take legal action to the offenders in a just and transparent manner with no impunity.
We believe that while the majority of the people wish to establish a democratic nation through peaceful and just way, and while the nation is in the process of nationwide ceasefire, it is a pity that brutality and violence are systematically practiced to incite conflicts, instability and weaken the peaceful and pluralistic society.
This incident is also indicating that there is no security in the rural areas.
In view of advancing inter-communal harmony and social cohesion, members of all religions and ethnic races should come together and condemn this brutal sexual violence. Religions for Peace – Myanmar encourages and call for maintaining peace and harmony in order to avoid undesirable problems.
