Ethnic Leader Demands Prisoner Releases

The chairman of the Pa-O National Liberation Organisation Khun Myint Tun said that the release of prisoners would be negotiated with the government before signing the nationwide ceasefire agreement.

Khun Myint Tun told the Law Khee Lar summit for armed ethnic groups that the release of the political prisoners was a necessary condition before the ceasefire could be signed.

He said: “Conditions are different now from before the nationwide ceasefire. The duty of the high-ranking representatives is finishing the agreement. What is more, we must make sure all 16 members of the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team sign no matter what the government side desires. We need to discuss the release of political prisoners, including the members of ethnic armed groups.”

The government has released many political prisoners, including ethnic armed members, but the Former Political Prisoners’ Society says many remain locked up.

There were 157 political prisoners and 450 activists detained in April, according to the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners.
