Vice Chair Crowley Extremely Concerned About Burmese Government’s Arrest of Peaceful Activists

(Queens, NY) – Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus and a leader in the House of Representatives on Burma, released the following statement in response to the Burmese government’s arrest and charging of two peaceful activists for peacefully exercising their freedom of speech. Patrick Kum Jaa Lee and Chaw Sandi Tun were separately arrested in recent days for posting opinions that run counter to the government on Facebook.

“The arrest of peaceful activists can only contribute to undermining the prospects of reform in the country. I call on Burma’s government to release Patrick Kum Jaa Lee and Chaw Sandi Tun, and all political prisoners who are still behind bars, immediately and unconditionally. Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of any democratic society and these arrests, as well as the fact that too many prisoners remain behind bars for exercising their political beliefs, raise serious concerns.”
