This commentary highlights the experiences of villagers in southeast Burma/Myanmar during the 2015 general elections, as well as their perspectives on the electoral process as a whole and expectations from the incoming Government of the Union of Myanmar. Based on 21 interviews conducted with villagers shortly following the elections, KHRG considers the extent to which the 2015 poll can be deemed “free and fair,” by evaluating the transparency, inclusivity, and credibility of the electoral process as it unfolded in KHRG’s research areas in southeast Burma/Myanmar.
