Unofficial translated summary of the statement by Ta’ang Women’s Organization. Original in Burmese below. Translation provided by Burma Partnership.
The Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO) was preparing to launch their latest report, “Trained to Torture,” on June 25, 2016, at the Orchid Hotel in Rangoon, Burma. TWO already invited media for the event on the 25th of June. However, authorities intervened and halted the launch of the report and TWO had to cancel their launch plans on the 25th. The press conference was then moved to June 27, 2016 at Excel Treasure Hotel in Rangoon. At midnight on the day before the launch, on June 26, 2016, TWO received a call from the Excel Treasure Hotel. They were informed that permission from the authorities was necessary to use the hotel for the launch of the report and was again forced to cancel the event.
TWO regards the cancellations by both hotels as an indicator of the ongoing restrictions on freedom of expression and media freedom, even under the new government. The report highlights human rights violations in northern Shan State from March 2011 to March 2016 and implicates the Burma Army’s involvement in these violations in armed conflict areas. The hotel informed TWO that due to the information provided in the report involving the Burma Army and politics, they were instructed by authorities to cancel the event.
TWO recommends that during the time of the new democratic government, media and press freedom and freedom of expression should not be restricted, and urges an immediate end to all human rights violations committed against ethnic people by the Burma Army in armed conflict areas.
