The Nobel Women’s Initiative and the Women’s League of Burma are planning an International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women in Burma.
The Tribunal will take place in New York City on March 2, 2010 and will coincide with the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women meeting. Eminent Judges (including Nobel Peace Laureates) will hear personal testimony from several women of Burma who will share their personal stories of having lived through a range of human rights violations under the military regime in Burma.

The tribunal will demand accountability and challenge the existing impunity for Burma’s military leaders. International, regional and local partners will play an important role, along with individuals and organizations working to promote justice, democracy and peace for the people of Burma.
We hope that testimony at the Tribunal will also support existing calls for a Commission of Inquiry by the UN Security Council into war crimes and crimes against humanity in Burma. The Tribunal also aims to engage members of the international community in activating the idea that there is a responsibility to protect those whose own governments are unwilling or unable to protect them. The Tribunal also aims raise awareness of the crisis in Burma ahead of the upcoming 2010 elections.
