Continuing Detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi ‘Politically Motivated’
By National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma • February 27, 2010The Burmese Supreme Court’s rejection of the appeal by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi comes as no surprise. If political motives of the Burmese generals were not in play, the democracy leader would never have been under house arrest.
In Burma, where verdicts for political activists are decided beforehand by the ruling military circles, we cannot envisage a few judges overruling the decision of Senior General Than Shwe to free Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Any form of freedom for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will only come when the senior general decides to show the world that he is “benevolent” toward political opposition.
The decision by the Supreme Court / the generals to reject the appeal of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi also emphasizes one important fact; that the generals are more afraid of the popular appeal of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi than censure from the international community.
It is also a signal to the international community and the United Nations that they need to do more. The generals will continue to ignore the international community unless international reaction to such injudicious acts becomes serious enough.
The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma lauds the defense team of the National League for Democracy which continues to seek justice for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi through legal channels. The lawyers are not placing their trust in the distorted judicial system but are merely setting an example and showing the people of Burma how things are done in civilized societies. They are acting exactly as what Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has always preached: Let others sin, but not you.
It is time for the Burmese generals to start acting nobly and respond to offers by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to work together to find solutions to the socioeconomic and political problems. The first step now to do that is to immediately and unconditionally release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
