Statement (1/2015)

Action Committee for Non-violence and Justice, comprised of representatives from various youth organizations and networks, was formed in response various crisis that Myanmar is encountering in today’s process of reform. We believe that tensions surrounding two major crises – public objection against National Education Law and Latpandaung mining project and the violent and irresponsible nature of responses from governance authorities – among many other challenges, are posing a threat to the peaceful transition of the country and we vow to work in ensuring current reform process is effectively and peacefully moving forward.

We are maintaining a close tie with student leaders, particularly with the Action Committee for Democratic Education – the leading committee of the student protests, and other civil society organizations, network and forum. We, as young people, stand with the students boycotting the National Education Law on the issue of education sector reform. We encourage all local stakeholders as well as the international community to call on the government and parliament for dialogue with the student leaders and other relevant parties to settle the crisis peacefully. We also call on all stakeholders to support students’ peaceful efforts and actions for education sector reform until meaningful dialogue take place between students leaders, and relevant governance authorities whether it is before or after the deadline (17 January 2015) set forth by the students to escalate their actions of objection to National Education Law.
