Philippine Senator Aquilino ‘Nene’ Q. Pimentel, Jr., Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians, has produced a 17-minute video presentation about the situation in Burma and recommended solutions. It will be shown at the Committee’s exhibit booth during the 122nd IPU Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand, from 27 March to 1 April.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union brings together parliamentarians from political parties in countries around the world to study international problems and make recommendations for action. The Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians, as its name says, concerns itself with the situation of parliamentarians, but Sen. Pimentel has vowed to look into the overall human rights situation in Burma.
Already, Sen. Pimentel has been under pressure from the Thai authorities to go slow on slamming Burma’s junta during the IPU Assembly. Sen. Pimentel is anguished by this censorship and is resolved to show and distribute the video anyway.
