Filipino solidarity activists to join Global Day of Action to Denounce Burma’s 2010 Military Elections

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the 1990 elections in Burma on May 27, activists around the world including those from the Philippines will mark the day with demonstrations and other solidarity events.

Pro-democracy activists around the world are one in saying that preparations and recently issued election laws by Burma’s military government clearly indicate that Burma’s 2010 elections will not serve the interests of the peoples of Burma but will just further entrench and legitimize the military’s hold to power.

Solidarity activists will hold a “People’s Elections” where people can vote for real democratic elections and will mark ballots calling on ASEAN and the international community to denounce the 2010 elections in Burma and reject the results unless the military generals of Burma initiate tangible democratic reforms.

Filipino activists say that for Burma elections to become truly democratic, the regime must first fullfil the following demands:

1. Release all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi;

2. Cease hostilities against ethnic and democracy groups; and,

3. Engage in an inclusive dialogue with key stakeholders from democracy groups and ethnic nationalities, including a review of the 2008 Constitution.

SCHEDULES OF RALLIES FOR TOMORROW, MAY 27:

Manila: Members of FBC-Phils will hold a protest action tomorrow (May 27, Thursday, 10:30 am) in front of the Myanmar-SPDC Embassy in Makati City.

Davao City: FBC-Phils Davao, the Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID) and the Bukluran para sa Sosyalistang Isip at Gawa (BISIG) will hold a rally in front of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) office (May 27, Thursday, 2PM) in Jacinto St. downtown Davao

Other international actions:

In New Delhi, India: People’s Elections and Rally. A People’s Election Commission was formed with Church and community leaders who will collect postcard ballots.

Events will be held between 27 and 30 May on the Thai-Burma border, in India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, UK, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, US, Canada, and Brazil, marking a Global Day of Action as part of the Global Campaign Against Burma’s 2010 Military Elections.
