What: Filipino activists under Free Burma Coalition – Philippines (FBC-Phils) will join tomorrow’s international celebration of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 65th Birthday

Born on June 19th, 1945, Aung San Suu Kyi is the world’s only imprisoned Nobel Peace laureate. Aung San Suu Kyi symbolizes the peoples of Burma’s continuing struggle for freedom and democracy. She has been under house arrest for almost 15 of the last 21 years by Burma’s military regime. On 11 August 2009 she was found guilty of violating the terms of her house arrest and was sentenced to a further 18 months under house arrest. Until today, with the rest of the thousands of political prisoners languishing in Burma’s detention centers, Aung San Suu Kyi continue to fight for genuine democracy, peace and freedom for Burma.

When and Where: Tomorrow, June 18, Friday at exactly 10:30 am infront of the Myanmar (Burma) Embassy in Makati City Philippines.

Since Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday coincides with the Women of Burma Day, Women activists from FBC-Phils will wear costumes of the women of Burma and “yellow Chrysanthemums”, which according to them symbolizes a demand for “LIBERTY, PEACE and JUSTICE” for the women of Burma.

According to reports by the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners- Burma (AAPPB) There are currently 2,157 political prisoners in Burma. In May 3 activists were arrested, 2 sentenced and 1 political prisoners was released. Since the protests in August 2007 leading to September’s Saffron Revolution, a total of 1,159 activists have been arrested and are still in detention.

Egoy Bans, FBC-Phils spokesperson says, “calling for Aung San Suu Kyi’s immediate and unconditional release would be the best gift that we could offer on her birthday. We see her continued detention as an outright insult to justice and democracy and a counter-productive move that will not contribute any significant political progress in Burma.”
