During a recent visit to Ottawa, Burmese Buddhist monks who played a leading role in the 2007 Saffron Revolution earnestly called on the government of Canada and the Canadian Parliament to reject the Nov. 7 elections in Burma due to unfair and undemocratic process.
Accompanied by revered U Kawida, vice-chair of International Burmese Monks Association (IBMA), the two monks – U Pyinya Zawta and U Agga Nyana – met with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs (FAC) and attended a discussion hosted by Parliamentary Friends of Burma (PFOB) and its vice-chair Paul Dewar on Parliament Hill last Friday October 15, 2010.
The monks also requested Canadian officials to offer practical support for the setup of a UN Commission of Inquiry into crime against humanity and war crime in Burma. Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon already pledged Canada’s support for the inquiry.
Monks will also participate in an event this evening entitled “Burma, Buddhism and Non-Violent Revolt” to be held at 7pm at the University of Toronto (Peace Lounge, Ontario Inst. for Studies in Ed., 252 Bloor St. West, 7th Floor). Contact Carina Lof at [email protected] or Zaw Zaw at 416-735-4128.
