Leading Burmese Buddhist monks call on Burma election boycott

During a recent visit to Ottawa, Burmese Buddhist monks who played a leading role in the 2007 Saffron Revolution earnestly called on the government of Canada and the Canadian Parliament to reject the Nov. 7 elections in Burma due to unfair and undemocratic process.

Accompanied by revered U Kawida, vice-chair of International Burmese Monks Association (IBMA), the two monks – U Pyinya Zawta and U Agga Nyana – met with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs (FAC) and attended a discussion hosted by Parliamentary Friends of Burma (PFOB) and its vice-chair Paul Dewar on Parliament Hill last Friday October 15, 2010.

The monks also requested Canadian officials to offer practical support for the setup of a UN Commission of Inquiry into crime against humanity and war crime in Burma. Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon already pledged Canada’s support for the inquiry.
