Dear Friends and Supporters,
As we welcome the year 2010 and wish you all a happy New Year, we would like to recall some of the achievements that have come from our collective efforts and coordination this past year.
Groups around the world collaborated on the Free Burma’s Political Prisoners Now campaign, gathering almost 678,000 signatures on a petition demanding the release of all political prisoners in Burma, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The petition was delivered to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon by a group of former political prisoners and human rights activists, including Nyi Nyi Aung, who has now sadly joined the ranks of the very people he was working to free. The global demand for the release of all political prisoners was adopted by the UN and international governments as a key benchmark that must be met on the path towards national reconciliation in Burma.
Also in 2009, representatives of many Burma civil society organizations in border areas came together as the Task Force on ASEAN Burma to collaborate on advocacy about the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). The group participated in both February and October sessions of the ASEAN Peoples’ Forum, successfully raising Burma as one of the key issues facing ASEAN.
Now the year 2010 is upon us. With all the challenges we anticipate during the junta’s impending elections, there has never been a greater need for coordination amongst us, the international movement for democracy, peace and human rights in Burma. Learning from our experience of working together in 2009, we are confident and prepared to face these challenges drawing strength from our commitment, our diversity, and the power of our collective efforts.
Together, we have laid a great foundation upon which we must continue to build our collective efforts, creating a stronger and more effective movement for democracy and human rights in Burma. We hope you are all as ready and looking forward to our continuing collective work in the coming year as we are here at Burma Partnership.
Thank you to all our Burma and solidarity friends, and supporters for your collaboration and hard work. We would also like to thank the international community, including governments and media, for your attention and support.
We wish you all a very happy New Year and look forward to working with you again soon.
In Solidarity,
Khin Ohmar and Soe Aung
