Palaung Women’s Organization launches report on surging opium cultivation in Burma
By Palaung Women's Organization • January 25, 2010The Palaung Women’s Organization cordially invites you to the launching of our new report, Poisoned Hills: Surging Opium Cultivation under Government Control in Burma, at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT) in Bangkok, January 26, 2010 at 10:30 am.
Please join us as we discuss the pressing issue of opium cultivation in Burma’s northern Shan State that has been increasing rapidly over the past three years in areas under the control of the ruling military government.
Representatives will be discussing the report’s findings on the SPDC “anti-drug teams” that systematically extort fees from villagers in exchange for allowing them to grow opium. This fraudulent practice has left the majority of opium fields intact while false eradication data is filed with police headquarters, denying this widespread corruption.
Speakers will also be addressing the political issues at the root of Burma’s civil war and the urgent needed to seriously confront the drug scourge which continues to adversely impact the region.
