PFOB Chair Decries Absurd Election Complaint Fees and Calls on the Military and its Proxy Party to Protect Aung San Suu Kyi

By Parliamentary Friends of Burma  •  November 16, 2010

It is absurdly difficult to make a complaint about the recent sham elections in Burma orchestrated by the military and their party USDP.  To make a single complaint costs about 5 times your annual income.  And if the complaint is determined to be unfounded, you can be fined about 15 times your annual salary.  “This is absurd” said PFOB Chair the Honourable Larry Bagnell M.P. Yukon.

“This is simply an extension of the illegitimacy of the entire process, where certain parties were not allowed to present candidates, certain regions of the country were not allowed to vote, and the costs to register as a candidate for the election were prohibitive”.

I also wish to remind the military regime and their party, USDP, that they are responsible for Aung San Suu Kyi’s safety now that she has been released from House Arrest.  The regime tried twice to assassinate her (and a hundred of her NLD party members were killed in the latest attempt).  “Any future attempts will likely be more sophisticated,” suggested PFOB Chair Hon. Larry Bagnell M.P.
