Eighteen representatives from Burma’s civil society, including members of the Task Force on ASEAN and Burma, will be traveling to Jakarta, Indonesia to participate in the ASEAN Civil Society Conference/ASEAN People’s Forum 2011 (ACSC/APF) from 3 to 5 May, and associated events.
The conference is organized as a parallel process to the ASEAN Summit, as a platform to exchange ideas and advance inputs to ASEAN leaders and policy-makers. This 6th ACSC/APF will bring together around 1,200 participants from civil society throughout the region.
The Burma delegation will be participating in the plenary session of the ACSC/APF on Tuesday 3 May. On 4 May, representatives will be holding a workshop entitled “ASEAN People’s Responsibility to Promote Human Rights and Democratization in Burma.” Other members of the delegation will be speaking at workshops on civil liberties, women and militarization, housing and human rights, and transitional justice. On the final day, the delegation will contribute to the drafting of the ACSC/APF statement summarizing outcomes of the conference and recommendations to ASEAN leaders. The delegation will also be participating in cultural events and a photo exhibition highlighting the struggles and achievements of the people’s movements throughout ASEAN.
For media in Jakarta, there will be a briefing on all of the civil society events around the ASEAN Summit including a regional youth conference, a public hearing on corporate social responsibility and ASEAN, and the interface between ASEAN civil society representatives and leaders.
