On Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011 at 12:30pm, the U.S. House Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, chaired by Congressman Donald Manzullo (R-IL), will hold a hearing, entitled “Piercing Burma’s Veil of Secrecy: The Truth Behind the Sham Election and the Difficult Road Ahead.” Chairman Donald Manzullo (R-IL) just announced he has received a pre-recorded video message from Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to be played during the hearing, a significant event as it is her first address to a Congressional Committee.
The timing of the hearing could not be more urgent, as Burma’s regime continues to launch military offensives against ethnic resistance groups in the Northern part of Burma in Shan State, and Kachin State, that has driven nearly 20,000 refugees into hiding along the China-Burma border and into China. Additional witnesses include Aung Din, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the U.S. Campaign for Burma and former political prisoner from Burma, and Dr. Chris Beyrer, Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health and Human Rights and co-author of several studies on the situation of public health and human rights in Burma.
Chairman Manzullo is also co-author with Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-NY) of the legislation that awarded Daw Aung San Suu Kyi the Congressional Gold Medal in 2008 (actual presentation of the medal has yet to take place).
