AAPP denounces inappropriate prison transfers of elderly Political prisoner, Gen. Hso Ten

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) (AAPP) received information that General Hso Ten was transferred to three different prisons in one week, in a cruel ploy to further weaken the already sick and elderly political prisoner.

General Hso Ten, 74 years old, a Shan ethnic politician, is currently serving a 106 year prison sentence. He suffers from heart problems, diabetes and has cataracts. The authorities have repeatedly denied him adequate medical care[…]

Monthly Chronology of Burma’s Political Prisoners in Burma –July 2010

Summary of current situation

There are a total of 2,174 political prisoners in Burma. This is an overall increase of 3 in comparison to last month’s figure of 2,171. In July, 2 political prisoners were arrested, and 4 were released. This retroactive information explains why there is actually an overall increase of 3 this month.

Since the protests in August 2007, leading to September’s Saffron Revolution, a total of 1,169 activists have been arrested and are still in detention[…]

* According to a village peace and development council official, even though authorities have been providing national IDs for residents in Gwa Township, Arakan State, there are many local people who cannot afford the cost and the time to wait. Gwa Immigration Department, in two groups, has been providing national IDs for any resident who are over 18 years of age with 1000 kyat service fee for each person.

Myanmar: UN Special Rapporteur calls for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi
